DVD - Hope and Glory
5 out of 10
Mediocre, at best.
This movie was about a young boy living in England when the war against the Nazis started. I would call it a coming-of-age story, except he does not nothing coming-of-age-ish. Bombs drop on their street. He joins a "gang" of shithead little boys who go around and further trash the houses that have been bombed. For them, the world "fuck" is too harsh, though being able to swear gets you into the gang outright. The boy's house burns down, his sister gets knocked up by a soldier, his mom confesses love for his dad (a soldier who didn't even discuss signing up for the war with his mom before doing it, and she's pissed but still smiles sweetly - gad!)'s best friend. None of this seems to phaze anyone much, and it's like looking at the world in a fog where nothing quite makes crystal-clear sense. And, nothing matters.
Of course, this is what it's like to be a boy! I totally get it now.
Um, he spends the summer in the country, and the best memory he ever had - this is where the movie ends, then - is when, on the first day of school, he grumbly goes on back, only to find that it's been bombed. Grandpa splits a side laughing uproariously. Boy learns how to throw a GOOGLIE while playing cricket, which must be like the best thing ever. But, guess what? NO ONE CARES.
BOOrrrrrrr-ing!

Wow. Sounds like this kid grew up where I grew up.
Stupid wanker.
I throw a mean GOOGLIE too
...it's gotten me far in life.
I don't want to get in the way of that GOOGLIE!
