Fly Girl - Queen Latifah

Well it's almost nightfall
and there's no forecast of rainfall
and I'm in the mood for a party
so I'm gonna go out to a club
and give the dancefloor
body

so I jump in the car and go to the venue
walk in the door and now I'm on the menu
guys in the house they're watching me
they're clocking me
there's no stopping me

(refrain)
(desire) I know you want me
(you're fine) thank you
but I'm not the type of girl that you think I am
I don't jump into the arms of every man
(but I'm paid) I don't need your money
(I love you) you must be mad
easy love is something that I ain't
besides, I don't know you from a can of paint

DVD - Songs from the Second Floor

? out of 10

Blessed Be the One Who Sits Down

In a sour, gray city, filled with pale drunken salarymen and parading flagellants, everything goes wrong, pain is laughed at, businesses fail, traffic seizes up and a girl is made into a human sacrifice to save a corporation. Roy Andersson's "Songs From the Second Floor" is a collision at the intersection of farce and tragedy--the apocalypse as a joke on us.

You have never seen a film like this before. You may not enjoy it but you will not forget it. Andersson is a deadpan Swedish surrealist who has spent the last 25 years making "the best TV commercials in the world" (Ingmar Bergman) and now bites off the hand that fed him, chews it thoughtfully, spits it out and tramples on it. His movie regards modern capitalist society with the detached hilarity of a fanatic saint squatting on his pillar in the desert.

The film opens ironically with a man in a tanning machine--ironic, because all of the other characters will look like they've spent years in sunless caves. It proceeds with a series of set-pieces in which the camera, rarely moving, gazes impassively at scenes of absurdity and despair. A man is fired and clings to the leg of his boss, who marches down a corridor dragging him behind. A magician saws a volunteer in two. Yes. A man with the wrong accent is attacked by a gang. A man burns down his own store and then assures insurance inspectors it was arson, but as they talk we lose interest because outside on the street a parade of flagellants marches past, whipping themselves in time to their march. -- BY ROGER EBERT / November 1, 2002

I am one in the camp of "I didn't like it. And, I've already forgotten about it." Really, I just had no patience for it. Off to watch my beloved Life of Mammals, vol. 2

Mercy Street - Peter Gabriel

(for Anne Sexton)

looking down on empty streets
all she can see
are the dreams all made solid
are the dreams all made real

she pictures the broken glass
she pictures the steam
she pictures a soul
with no leak at the seam

dreaming of mercy street
wear your inside out

tugging at the darkness
word upon word

APPARITIONS, Or "I know all of these posts can't be entitled 'You've Got to Be Kidding Me!' - or can they??"

Yeah, check this out.

Bette Shober (L) and Joanne Vrablik (R) take a closerlook at what people believe to be an image of theVirgin Mary under a freeway underpass in Chicago,April 18, 2005. Police said the image might have beencaused by stains from road salt that dripped from theKennedy expressway onto the wall, but hundreds ofbelievers have been coming to the underpass to viewthe image and pray at the spot. I don't mean to laugh.

I just can't help it.

Update: thanks for Phreadom and M. Burns for linking me to the Virgin Mary cheese slices. I mean, grill cheese sandwich. It's American, I'm sure, so what difference does it make?

OK. And, OK. People. That toast looks like Pat Benatar, not the Virgin Mary! I mean -- really!

This image sort of looks like a Virgin Mary cheese toast as well. How much do you think I can get for it??

DVD - Hope and Glory

5 out of 10

Mediocre, at best.

This movie was about a young boy living in England when the war against the Nazis started. I would call it a coming-of-age story, except he does not nothing coming-of-age-ish. Bombs drop on their street. He joins a "gang" of shithead little boys who go around and further trash the houses that have been bombed. For them, the world "fuck" is too harsh, though being able to swear gets you into the gang outright. The boy's house burns down, his sister gets knocked up by a soldier, his mom confesses love for his dad (a soldier who didn't even discuss signing up for the war with his mom before doing it, and she's pissed but still smiles sweetly - gad!)'s best friend. None of this seems to phaze anyone much, and it's like looking at the world in a fog where nothing quite makes crystal-clear sense. And, nothing matters.

Of course, this is what it's like to be a boy! I totally get it now.

Um, he spends the summer in the country, and the best memory he ever had - this is where the movie ends, then - is when, on the first day of school, he grumbly goes on back, only to find that it's been bombed. Grandpa splits a side laughing uproariously. Boy learns how to throw a GOOGLIE while playing cricket, which must be like the best thing ever. But, guess what? NO ONE CARES.

BOOrrrrrrr-ing!

DVD - Stardom

3 1/2 out of 10

Pretty damn awful. There was no point to this movie, and it was dumb to boot. I don't get it; was it supposed to be a parody like Drop Dead Gorgeous (a superior piece of film)? If so, it failed miserably. It wasn't even kinda fun! Just annoying. Disappointing because I really wanted to see Jessica Pare in something else. This was nothing else. Two words. Unrelentingly kitsch. Not watchable. Not recommended. At all.

I have a splinter in my finger. And now in my eye, too.

Breathtaking. Great and powerful. High tech, even. Highly recommended to anyone who is truly curious about the world around them.

Flaming Balls of Meteor

This is what that flaming crap ball I saw a while back looked (more) like:

Word of the Day: "Clocky"

A 25-year-old Massachusetts Institute of Technology student has invented a revolutionary alarm clock 'clocky,' in this undated photo, that falls to the floor and rolls away on the first push of the snooze button. To turn it off, a person must get out of bed and find it. The clock features two rubber wheels and is covered in thick, 1970s-style shag carpet and other material to cushion it when it tumbles to the floor.

Tarot Reading - Long Overdue

MOOD: relieved, directed

What's happening now points to the Father of Cups - intelligence, understanding, strength - all coming from emotion. In my past, reversed Ace of Wands points to false starts, misdirection, and thwarted passion. To think about, Four of Swords - rest, a time to recuperate and recover coming from peacefulness and resolve, before moving on to... the Eight of Cups - changing course, going a different direction, putting my things in order then turning my back on the past with a fresh change of heart and a resolved determination to see what's on the other side.

Who says this stuff is all hooey?
